NGO Lifelong Learning Centre’s Head, Yuriy Petrushenko, Invited to James Madison University for an International Civic Studies Seminar

The Lifelong Learning Centre is proud to announce that its leader, Professor Yuriy Petrushenko, Head of the Department of International Economic Relations and a Doctor of Economic Sciences, was invited to James Madison University in Virginia, USA. He participated in the International Institute for Civic Studies and Training for Democracy from September 3-10, 2023.

James Madison University is one of the leading public universities in the United States, renowned for its focus on social studies. According to the Wall Street Journal and Times Higher Education rankings, it is highly recommended for education among all public universities in the USA. The Institute for Civic Studies and Training for Democracy is an intensive 8-day international academic seminar that brought together a group of 20 scholars from around the world. These scholars are engaged in issues related to the development of civil society, the role of education in promoting democracy and economic change, the role of institutions in civil society development, and ethical foundations of civic issues in a democratic society. The participants discussed current research issues in supporting and developing democracy worldwide, primarily challenges due to Russia’s war against Ukraine. Future collaboration steps, joint publications, and projects were also outlined.

During the event, a scientific monograph co-authored by Yuriy Petrushenko was presented, published by Michigan State University Press: “Transformative Civic Education in Democratic Societies.”
